Konrad Zuse (1910 - 1995)

Until 1936, all arithmetic machines were manually operated.

Konrad Zuse realized that an automatic-calculating device

would require three basic elements:
  1. A Control
  2. A Memory
  3. A Calculator for the arithmetic

In 1936, he developed a mechanical calculator called the Z1, which was the first binary computer.

In 1946, Konrad Zuse also wrote the first programming language called 'Plankalkul' which he used to program all his computers with.

He also used 'Plankalkul' to program the worlds first chess-playing program.
